5 Expert Tips to Store Kanjivaram & Banarasi Sarees for Years
Share
Your heavy Kanjivaram, Banarasi, and Paithani sarees are not just clothes—they are heirlooms. But did you know that storing them incorrectly can turn the real gold Zari black or cause the silk to tear at the folds?
As textile experts from Surat, we see many expensive sarees ruined simply because of wrong storage habits.
Here are the 5 Golden Rules to keep your wedding and festival sarees looking new for decades.
1. Never Hang Heavy Sarees
Heavy silk sarees have weight. If you hang them on a hanger for months, gravity pulls the fabric down. This weakens the shoulder folds and can cause the fabric to tear permanently.
The Fix: Always store heavy sarees flat in a stack.
2. Change the Folds Every 3-4 Months
If a saree stays folded in the exact same position for too long, the crease lines can become permanent cracks in the silk.
The Fix: Take your sarees out once every few months, air them in mild shade (never direct sunlight), and refold them differently to avoid permanent creases.
3. Say NO to Newspapers
Our grandmothers used to wrap sarees in newspapers. This is a bad idea today! Newspaper ink contains chemicals that can transfer onto your saree and damage the Zari.
The Fix: Use a clean, white muslin cloth or a dedicated pure cotton saree cover to wrap them safely.
4. Avoid Naphthalene Balls Touching the Zari
Insect repellents are necessary, but Naphthalene balls (damar goli) contain strong chemicals. If they touch the Zari directly, the silver/gold thread will turn black (oxidize).
The Fix: Keep repellents in the corner of your wardrobe, never inside the saree folds.
5. Use Breathable Storage Bags (Not Plastic!)
We cannot stress this enough—plastic kills silk. Plastic traps moisture, leading to fungus and bad odors.
The Fix: Always store your expensive silks in GharCraft’s Pure Cotton Saree Covers. Our covers are made from 100% breathable cotton which prevents fungus, protects the Zari from blackening, and keeps your wardrobe organized.
Conclusion
Preserving your heritage doesn't require hard work; it just requires the right storage.
